South-East Alaska
Northern Fjords, Humpback Whales, and Native Culture
We explore the far reaches of the Northwest; Alaska's Panhandle reveals densely forested islands, deeply carved fjords, set against a backdrop of spectacular mountains crested by glaciers. We travel the vast expanse of the Tongass National Forest: a world of ice flows, of rich waterways nurturing an abundance of wildlife, where the grizzly bear and the majestic Humpback whale thrive in areas like Frederick Sound. We discover the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian First Nation cultures in the Native Heritage Sites we visit and marvel at the remains of Totem poles revealing colourful legends and history.
South-East Alaska is also rich in pioneer history. A notable influence by the first Russian, British, and American fur traders is felt in the picturesque frontier towns and boardwalk communities we visit.
